Gimme a Break tv show is about the story of a black housekeeper, Nell Harper, who maintained order in the home of a portly white police chief in Glen Lawn, California. Carl Kanisky is the chief of police who's beloved wife Margaret had died only months before, leaving him with three daughters, Julie, Katie and Samantha. Nell act as a replacement mother to the daughters cause their has passed away and as a buffer between the girls and their father, cause Carl is not exactly in touch with his feminine side. Later, Carl's father, Stanley, moves in. As the 1985-1986 season opened the chief had passed away, and Nell became both mother and father to the Kanisky brood. The man of the house was now Jonathan, who had married Julie at the end of the 1984-1985 season and moved in.
